Saturday Sampler 2014 - Sew and Tell - Block #5

Welcome to Block #5:  Pineapple Smoothie, from our Saturday Sampler 2014, Sew and Tell Series.








Our block patterns will be posted on the 2nd Saturday of each month, so check back through the year to make all twelve sampler blocks with us.

Our blocks are 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" (12" x 12" finished)

All seam allowances are 1/4".

What to Cut:

A:  Orange:   
A: (1) 3 1/2” x 3 1/2 ”

B:  Light Yellow:   
B:  (4) 2” x 4 1/4”

C:  Blue Chill:   
C:  (4) 2” x 5 1/2”

D:  Corn Yellow:   
D:  (4) 2” x 5 1/2”

E:  Caribbean Blue:   
E:  (4) 2” x 7”

F:  Papaya:  
F:  (4) 2” x 6 1/2”

G:  Glacier Blue:   
G:  (2) 5 1/2” x  5 1/2”, cut in half diagonally




Construction:

1.  Sew the (B) 2” x 4 1/4” light yellow rectangles to opposite sides of the 3 1/2” (A) orange square. Turn unit so that the orange center square is on point.   




Repeat on remaining two sides.  The rectangles will extend over the edges of the square.





Turn unit so that the orange center square is on point.




Trim the unit to 4 3/4” x  4 3/4” square, centering the orange square, and referring to photo to properly align ruler for trimming.




Sew the (C) 2” x 5 1/2” blue chill rectangles to opposite sides of the square created above.  



Repeat on remaining two sides.  The rectangles will extend over the edges of the square.  



Turn unit so that the orange center square is straight.  Align ruler parallel to the edge of the orange center square, placing edge of ruler 1/4” beyond the point where the yellow and blue fabrics intersect (indicated by arrows in photo), referring to photo to properly align ruler for trimming.  Be sure that the ruler is parallel to the center square and that you are cutting at a 45 degree angle to the edges of strip you are trimming.








Sew the (D) 2” x 5 1/2” corn yellow rectangles to the straight edges of the square created above.  



Turn unit so that the orange center square is on point.  Align ruler even with the edge of the chill blue fabric referring to photo to properly align ruler for trimming.  Be sure that the ruler is parallel to the edges of the B square and that you are cutting at a 45 degree angle to the edges of strip you are trimming.






 Sew the (E) 2” x 7” Caribbean blue rectangles to the straight edges of the square created above.   




Turn unit so that the orange center square is straight.  Align ruler even with the edge of the corn yellow fabric referring to photo to properly align ruler for trimming.  Trim all four sides.




Sew the (F) 2” x 6 1/2” papaya rectangles to the straight edges of the square created above.  




Turn unit so that the orange center square is on point.  Align ruler even with the edge of the Caribbean Blue fabric referring to photo to properly align ruler for trimming.  Trim all four sides.




Cut the (G) Glacier Blue 5 1/2” squares in half diagonally.  


Sew to the straight edges of the square created above.  


Trim block to 12 1/2” x 12 1/2”.
